Before we look at active birth units, a brief explanation on Active Birth is necessary.
There is a two-pronged approach to Active Birth. First the psychological / mental part. Active Birth us about being an active participant in the birthing process. You make a decision to become informed, find out your options and not just passively go along with all that is suggested to you.
The second part of Active Birth is the physical component. Choosing to be active, up and moving in labour rather than strapped to a monitor in a bed. All the advantages of Active and Upright birth are a whole discussion point in themselves.
An Active Birth unit therefore is an environment which encourages women to feel relaxed and to move easily. It is a home from home environment but within or next to a hospital allowing for easy access to medical intervention should it be required. We know women labour best when they are relaxed therefore to have a room which looks and feels like their bedroom is much more likely to make them relaxed than a sterile hospital room.
