There are a number of indicators that parents can use to assess whether their breastfed baby is getting enough.
Firstly - weight is a good indicator. A baby gaining weight is getting sufficient intake. However, it is important to bear in mind that breastfed babies often put on a lot of weight and then plateau out this is normal and does not mean they are suddenly not getting enough.
Stools are another key indicator. In the early weeks, if a baby is having at least 1 stool per day, this is a good sign that they are well nourished. Wet nappies 4/6 per day from Day 5 is another excellent indicator.
A content baby lets us know they have enough because they are not fractious or irritable from hunger. When a baby is feeding at the breast if you can hear it sucking and swallowing that is also wonderful reassurance that the baby is receiving more than sufficient milk. Back |
