- Basic observations
- Check for signs of infection
- Check sutures either perineal or from caesarean section
- Discuss pain relief options / comfort
- Monitor lochia (blood loss)
- Check involution of the uterus
- Assist with breastfeeding including checking breasts for engorgement, cracked nipples etc.
A large part of the visit is about offering emotional support to the Mum. Supporting her through "The Blues", discussing adjusting to motherhood, or coping with an extra child.
